The top ten causes of mortality in the PHL in 2011 were:
l. heart disease
2. stroke
3. cancer
4.C.O.P.D
5. road accidents and injuries
6. diabetes
7. Dengue fever
8. Maternal deaths
9. Kidney failure
10. Perinatal conditions
Number 4 is clearly related to smoking and air pollution. In my recent post regarding air pollution in UK, it was established that the cause of deaths from heart disease were PM 2.5 pollutants. Diesel fumes has been established to be carcinogenic (#3)
The PM 2.5 lodges into the lungs and RBC that passes through the lungs for oxygenation. The PM 2.5 is carried to other organs and tissues and the first stop is the heart from pulmonary vein. The PM 2.5 causes inflammation in the heart and eventually heart disease.
It is clear also here that there are more deaths from COPD rather than from road accidents and injuries. This is a similar experience to post on California.
This site would like followers and leaders to be aware of air pollution and how it impacts our lives and health. We seem to be uncaring about this growing serious problem which we know is there but we do nothing. Shall we wait for air pollution to be as serious as in Beijing? When do we act? Air pollution, Metro Manila, , lung, heart, cancer, diseases, global warming, low visibility, PM 2.5, Clean Air Act, smoke belchers, climate change, super typhoons, drought, AQI
